Passivation Efficiency
The passivation efficiency indicates how well a chemically produced layer protects stainless steel. It is determined by measurements or tests.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
Passivation of stainless steels forms a thin, stabilized layer on the surface that blocks oxygen and other corrosive substances. This prevents the steel from flaring and protects it from corrosion.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks When Welding
A high passivation efficiency means the layer is well stabilized and has a long service life. A low efficiency can lead to accelerated corrosion and cause the material to fail prematurely.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To measure passivation efficiency, use electrochemical impedance measurements or outdoor exposure tests. If efficiency is low, polish the steel surface or apply a new chemical passivation treatment.
