Bismuth Microsegregation

Bismuth microsegregation is an enrichment of bismuth at grain boundaries, leading to embrittlement during hot forming. The element must be kept limited in the melt.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

Bismuth microsegregation occurs when bismuth concentrates at the grain boundaries. This leads to embrittlement of the metal structure.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks When Welding

High bismuth microsegregation can cause embrittlement and cracking during hot working. This increases the susceptibility to hot cracking and reduces the toughness of the material.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Make sure the bismuth content in the melt stays below 0.1 %. Monitor the melt analysis regularly and correct the bismuth addition if necessary.
