Tungsten Inclusion
Tungsten inclusions are particles from the electrode that get trapped in the weld metal during TIG welding. They can cause hardness issues and cracks.
Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism
Tungsten inclusions occur when tungsten from the electrode is trapped in the weld metal during contact with the weld pool. This can happen due to insufficient cleaning or excessive voltages during TIG welding.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Tungsten inclusions can alter the microstructure of the weld metal, leading to increased hardness and reduced toughness. This can cause cracks and wear in the weld metal and reduce part life.
Workshop Practice & Handling Instructions
To minimize tungsten inclusions, it's important to regularly clean the electrode and ensure no unwanted material gets into the weld pool. Correct voltage settings and careful cooling of the weld also help avoid tungsten inclusions.
