Rare-Earth Doped Tungsten Electrode

Rare-earth doped tungsten electrode is a thorium-free tungsten rod containing rare earth oxides. It improves electron emission and arc stability in TIG welding.

Physical-Chemical Working Mechanism

The rare-earth coating on the tungsten electrode consists of oxides of elements like zirconium, cerium, or lanthanum. These coatings promote electron emission and stabilize the arc by reducing the thermal growth of the conducting material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Thorium-free tungsten electrodes with rare-earth coating offer higher arc stability and improved electron emission, leading to a more precise and stable weld. If the rare-earth oxides are missing or defective, electron emission can decrease, resulting in irregular arc strength and poorer weld quality.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use tungsten electrodes with rare-earth coating for TIG welding, especially on materials like Delrin or other thermoplastics. Ensure the electrode is clean and dry, and the arc stabilizer is properly set. If you have emission issues, check the conducting path and the rare-earth coating for damage.
