WRC-1992 Weld Metal Diagram
A standardized diagram by the Welding Research Council for the precise prediction of ferrite content and hot cracking susceptibility in austenitic and duplex weld joints.
The WRC-1992 diagram is a tool for estimating the ferrite content in the weld seam of austenitic and duplex steels. It works via the chemical composition of the filler and base material, not via parameters such as temperature or time. You plot the so-called chromium and nickel equivalents and can read off whether your structure will be more ferritic or austenitic. Too much ferrite makes the seam brittle and prone to cracking; too little can lead to hot cracking. The diagram helps you choose the right filler to land in the optimal range. But it doesn't replace practice: cooling conditions and heat input also affect the result, so always keep an eye on them.
