Excess weld reinforcement
Excessive reinforcement of the cap pass leading to an unfavorable weld transition to the base material and severe notch effect. It is usually caused by excessively slow travel speed or too high filler metal feed.
A weld reinforcement occurs when too much filler metal is applied and the molten pool doesn't flow properly. This results in a too high, bumpy weld bead with poor transition to the base material. The weld is then notch-sensitive and the load-bearing capacity suffers. Adjust your travel speed and wire feed to match each other. If the bead gets too high, go faster or use less filler metal. The molten pool must be able to run out cleanly so that the weld becomes nice and flat.
