Root Sagging

Root sagging occurs in single-sided welds when the molten material sags at the root. This can lead to geometric inhomogeneities.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Excessive penetration occurs in single-sided welds when the molten filler metal sags through the root. This can lead to geometric inhomogeneities.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Excessive penetration can cause geometric inhomogeneities and thus weaken the weld. It increases the risk of cracking and reduces material toughness.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid excessive penetration, ensure proper root support and control the heat input. Use the right welding direction and check the welding parameters regularly.
