Root penetration
The extent to which the molten metal penetrates and fuses into the base material at the underside of the joint.
Root burn-through occurs when the weld melts too deeply into the base material and the root side melts uncontrollably. This usually happens when you work with too much heat or too slow travel speed. This can cause the root to fray or even burn through, weakening the joint's load capacity. Make sure to adjust the heat input to the material and joint position. If you see the root melting too much, turn down the heat or increase speed. You get a clean root when the weld pool is guided calmly and controlled.
