Root Pass Welding

Root pass welding is the process of depositing the first weld bead in the joint root. This is critical for complete penetration and the development of the root filler material.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Root pass welding starts with the penetration of the welding rods into the root of the joint. Here, metal and flux react to create a tight bond. Temperature and pressure are critical for complete penetration.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Improper handling can lead to incomplete penetration or joint separation. This increases the risk of cracks and reduces joint strength.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Make sure the melting temperature and pressure are set correctly. The joint root must be clean and dry. Monitor the welding process constantly and check penetration.
