Root protrusionexcess
Root bulge is an excessive, localized protrusion of the weld root on the back side that must be mechanically removed if it obstructs flow.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Root buildup occurs due to too rapid cooling or excessively high welding pressure values. This leads to local solidification and formation of a root hump, which then creates mechanical obstacles.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Root buildup can cause hot cracking and component failure. It obstructs the flow of weld metal, leading to incomplete joints and lower strength.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To avoid root buildup, watch for controlled cooling and proper welding pressure. If buildup exists, remove it mechanically with a fine burr or a pointed screwdriver to free the flow.
