Root Radius

The root radius for rounded joint geometries is the radius of curvature at the start of the weld joint. It reduces notch stresses and improves weld pool control.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

The root radius influences the stress state at the start of the joint. A rounded shape reduces local stress and promotes even weld pool formation.

Metallurgical relevance & risks when welding

A root radius that is too small can lead to high notch stresses, resulting in cracks or hot cracks in the material. A radius that is too large can hinder weld pool guidance and lead to uneven deformation.

Workshop practice & instructions

For an optimal joint, the root radius should be between 1.5 and 3 mm. For heavy materials or high stress levels, a larger radius (up to 4 mm) can be beneficial. Make sure the joint is rounded and not sharp.
