Root protection ceramic backing

A ceramic backing bar is a ceramic layer on the root side of a weld that supports the molten pool and prevents oxidation, enabling single-sided welding with full penetration.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The ceramic backing forms a dense layer on the root side of the steel. It protects the metal from oxidation and prevents oxygen from entering the weld pool. This is especially important in high-temperature processes, as oxidation impairs the strength and mechanical properties of the material.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks During Welding

Without the ceramic backing, the steel on the root side can oxidize, leading to porosity and reduced mechanical properties. This increases the risk of cracking and reduces the service life of the weld. The ceramic backing ensures that the weld pool remains stable and allows for single-sided full penetration without the need for additional shielding measures.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

When applying the ceramic backing, it is important to ensure that it is clean and firmly attached to the root side of the steel. The welding temperature should be set so that the metal reaches the desired state without oxidation occurring. If applied incorrectly or at too high temperatures, the ceramic can lift and lose its protective function.
