Root Protection Powder

Root backing powder is a fine-grained auxiliary material applied to the root side of pipe weld joints to prevent oxidation and form a glassy protective layer. This layer protects the root from corrosion and makes removal easier after solidification.

Physico-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Root protection powder consists of fine particles that form a protective layer on the root side. These particles react with moisture in the air and form a glassy layer that prevents oxidation.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Without root protection powder, the root can oxidize during welding, leading to corrosion and loss of material. Proper application ensures a clean root and prevents cracks or hardness issues in the weld.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

Use root protection powder by spraying it onto the root side of the pipe before welding. Ensure the powder particles are well distributed with no gaps. After the weld has solidified, remove the powder with a fine cloth or air gun.
