Root Opening Tolerance Range

The tolerance zone for the joint gap to avoid burn-through and incomplete root penetration.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The joint gap affects how fast oxygen and carbon diffuse into the metal. A gap that's too big can lead to incomplete root penetration, while a gap that's too small can cause burn marks.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A joint gap that's too big can result in a lack of hardness and toughness in the weld root, which can cause cracks and failures in service. A gap that's too small can cause burn marks and local loss of strength.

Shop Practice & Action Points

The joint gap should be between 0.15 mm and 0.25 mm. For heavy metals or high stress conditions, you can increase the upper limit a bit. Keep an eye on the gap and adjust your welding parameters accordingly.
