Root Face

The root face is the un-beveled, blunt edge on the root side of the groove. It prevents uncontrolled burn-through during welding.

Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism

The root face forms a barrier that prevents the mixing of metals and filler materials. This leads to an uneven melt rate at the joint edges.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

A missing root face can lead to uncontrolled burn-through and porosity. This increases the risk of cracks and reduces the strength of the weld.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

Make sure the root face is present before you start welding. This can be achieved by careful surface preparation or by using backing strips.
