Root Penetration / Excess Root Metal
Root reinforcement is a weld that protrudes above the workpiece surface. It can cause mechanical stress and porosity.
Physical-Chemical Action Mechanism
Root reinforcement occurs when the weld resistance is not sufficient. This can be caused by too low voltage or insufficient weld length.
Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding
Root reinforcement leads to increased mechanical stresses and can cause porosity and cracks in the weld. It impairs the strength and toughness of the joint.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
To avoid root reinforcement, make sure the voltage is sufficient (at least 100 N/mm²) and the weld length is not too short. Regularly check the workpiece geometry and the welding process.
