Root Offset

Root misalignment is a sideways shift of the root pass relative to the joint's symmetry axis, often caused by incorrect torch guidance or uneven heat distribution. It leads to an uneven weld and increases the risk of cracking.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Root misalignment occurs when the torch guidance is not symmetrical or heat is not evenly distributed across the weld. This causes the weld root to deviate from its ideal symmetry axis.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Root misalignment can lead to uneven stress distribution and inconsistent strength in the weld. This increases the risk of cracking, especially if the offset is large or the weld is under high mechanical stress.

Shop Practice & Action Guidelines

To avoid root misalignment, ensure symmetrical torch guidance and even heat transfer. If misalignment is detected, correct it during the process. This can be done by adjusting torch position or heat distribution.
