Root misalignment tolerance
Root misalignment tolerance is the maximum misalignment a weld can have from the ideal root path without affecting the microstructure or mechanical properties.
Physicochemical Operating Principle
Root gap tolerance refers to the maximum allowable deviation of the weld seam from the ideal root path. This deviation can be influenced by various factors such as stress, temperature, and material properties.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
An excessive gap can alter the weld's microstructure, leading to reduced mechanical properties. This may cause cracks or deformation in the material and reduce the service life of the components.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
The root gap tolerance should be considered for every welding process. For steel welds, it is typically max. 1.5 mm. For highly stressed applications or critical parts, a smaller gap of 0.5 to 1 mm is preferred. It is important to align the weld precisely and carefully control stress and temperature during welding.
