Double-V Groove
The X-groove is a double-sided symmetrically beveled groove that minimizes the required weld metal cross-section for thicker plates and balances distortion symmetrically. It improves mechanical strength and reduces the risk of stress distribution errors.
Physicochemical Operating Principle
The X-groove allows an optimized weld cross-section by reducing the volume of material to be welded. This is achieved by the symmetrical arrangement of the joint faces, which distributes distortion evenly on both sides, thus absorbing stresses equally.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
The X-groove reduces the risk of stress distribution errors, as it absorbs distortion evenly. This leads to improved mechanical strength and reduces the likelihood of cracks or stress cracks in the weld. However, an improperly executed distortion can lead to uneven stresses, which in turn can cause porosity or hot cracks.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
To introduce the X-groove correctly, ensure a symmetrical arrangement of the joint faces. The distortion direction should run parallel to the weld and have the same distance to both plate sides. A precision of ±0.5 mm is common. Make sure the groove is flat and straight to ensure even stress distribution.
