Double-V butt joint groove
A double-sided V-groove applied in heavier plate thicknesses to minimize the weld volume and distortion. The symmetry promotes a balanced distribution of residual stresses.
The X-groove is a double-V-groove that you bevel from both sides. This halves the weld volume per side and the joint is more balanced in terms of stress. It's the go-to method for thick plates where you'd otherwise have to lay down too much weld from one side. Make sure both sides are clean and symmetrically prepared, or you'll warp the part. Weld alternately in layers from both sides to keep distortion manageable.
