Ductile Fracture

Ductile fracture is a sudden, abrupt break with high energy absorption through plastic deformation of the material.

Physico-chemical mechanism of action

In ductile fracture, the atoms in the material are deformed so strongly that it breaks suddenly and abruptly. This process is often referred to as necking.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Ductile fracture can occur in welded steels when the material reaches too high a stress level and breaks suddenly. This leads to unpredictable cracks and can endanger the safety of the components.

Workshop practice & instructions

To avoid ductile fracture, it is important that the material does not exceed its stress limits. This requires a correct selection of the material and a careful welding process. For highly stressed components, additional inspections should be carried out.
