Ductile-to-Brittle Transition Temperature

The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature marks the temperature range where a material shifts its deformation behavior from ductile to brittle. Below this value, the risk of sudden cleavage fracture increases dramatically.

The ductile-to-brittle transition temperature is the point where a material changes from ductile to brittle. In welding, this means: if the component is under stress in this range, it can break without warning. Especially with thick plates or cold weather, you need to keep this in mind. Don't let the weld cool too quickly and preheat the material if necessary. If you don't know the material, better ask before welding something that might break afterwards.
