Cellulosic coating

Cellulose coatings are electrode coatings with a high organic content that, due to strong gas formation, are ideal for vertical down welding.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Cellulose coatings consist of a highly organic material that outgasses strongly during welding. This process increases gas evolution and improves weld quality.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The strong gas formation can lead to better weld quality by reducing porosity. However, it can also cause over-gassing, which can contaminate the weld and impair its strength. Therefore, careful control of gas evolution is essential.

Workshop Practice & Action Items

Use cellulose coatings for welding processes with high gas demand, like vertical-down welding. Make sure gas evolution is controlled and no over-gassing occurs. Too much gas can contaminate the weld.
