Zener pinning

Zener pinning prevents grain growth by insoluble particles that block grain boundaries and suppress the growth of crystal grains. This is especially important at high temperatures during welding.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

Zener pinning occurs through the inclusion of insoluble particles in the metal structure that block grain boundaries. These particles can be chemical additives or special materials that don't dissolve during welding and thus suppress the growth of crystal grains.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

At high temperatures during welding, the metal structure can change significantly, which can lead to grain growth. This can impair the strength and mechanical properties of the material. Zener pinning prevents this grain growth by blocking the grain boundaries.

Workshop Practice & Action Instructions

To achieve Zener pinning, insoluble particles must be incorporated into the metal structure. This can be done through special additives or by a special welding process. The exact concentration and type of particles depend on the material used and the desired properties.
