Centerline crack

A center crack is an axial crack in the middle of the weld bead, occurring during hot cracking. It results from unfavorable stress fields in the weld center.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

A centerline crack forms in the middle of the weld bead when the stresses during hot cracking are too high. These stresses arise from the cooling and deformation of the steel.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

A centerline crack can lead to hot cracks that impair the strength of the weld. It increases the likelihood of crack propagation and can endanger the entire component.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

To avoid centerline cracks, ensure even cooling of the weld. Use suitable shielding gases and flow rates to minimize stress fields. Keep heat dissipation in the weld area constant and avoid rapid temperature changes.
