Zirconium

Zirconium is a strong deoxidizer and denitriding addition that helps refine grain and modify inclusions in molten metal.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Zirconium reacts with oxygen and nitrogen in the molten pool to bind them. This prevents the formation of pores and improves the strength of the metal.

Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding

Too high a zirconium content can alter the structure of the metal, leading to increased hardness and possible cracks. It is important to control the zirconium content precisely.

Workshop practice & instructions

Use zirconium in concentrated amounts (e.g., 0.1 to 0.3 %) in the molten pool to support deoxidation and denitriding. Make sure the zirconium content does not rise above 0.5 % to minimize risks to the structure.
