Zirconiated Tungsten Electrode
Zirconium-doped tungsten electrode: Stabilizes ball formation when welding aluminum, prevents deformation, and improves weld quality.
Physicochemical mechanism of action
The zirconium-doped tungsten electrode contains small zirconium particles that stabilize the electrode surface. These particles prevent the balling and deformation at the electrode tip, which is typical for aluminum alloys.
Metallurgical relevance & risks in welding
Without zirconium doping, the electrode can undergo frequent deformation and unstable balling during aluminum welding. This can lead to irregular weld profiles, porosity, and poor weld quality. Zirconium doping improves control over the welding process and minimizes these risks.
Workshop practice & instructions
Use zirconium-doped tungsten electrodes for aluminum welding, especially for thin-walled work. Make sure the electrode is clean and dry before use. The optimal doping concentration is typically 0.5 to 1 %. If balling issues occur, check the doping and the electrode quality.
