Zirconiated Tungsten Electrode

Zirconium-tungsten electrode is a special electrode for AC TIG welding of aluminum alloys. It forms a stable ball and prevents tungsten inclusions.

Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action

The zirconiated tungsten electrode has a tungsten core with zirconia added. This additive improves arc stability and prevents tungsten from being trapped in the weld.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

Tungsten inclusions can weaken the aluminum alloy and cause cracks. The stable ball at the electrode tip ensures uniform heat transfer and better weld quality.

Shop Practice & Action Points

Use zirconiated tungsten electrodes for AC TIG welding of aluminum alloys. Make sure the electrode is properly mounted and forms a stable ball. Avoid excessive current to prevent tungsten inclusions.
