Zirconium Deoxidation and Grain Control
Zirconium reduces oxygen and other gases in the weld pool, prevents porosity, and controls grain size. This increases strength and thermal stability.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
Zirconium reacts in the molten pool with oxygen, carbon, and other gases to bind them. This prevents the formation of pores and improves the homogeneity of the melt.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Adequate zirconium deoxidation leads to a fine-grained structure with small grain size, which increases strength and thermal stability. Too little zirconium can lead to porosity and poor grain control, which poses risks for cracks and distortion.
Workshop Practice & Instructions
Use a zirconium deoxidizer mixture in the molten pool. The concentration should be between 0.1% and 0.3%. Make sure the melt is well mixed and the grain size remains fine. Monitor the temperature and cooling time to achieve an optimal microstructure.
