Zirconium Grain Refinement

The addition of zirconium to produce fine crystallites in the solidification structure of alloys. This increases homogeneity and reduces the tendency toward casting-related defects.

Zirconium acts as a grain refiner in the weld metal. It binds impurities and ensures that fine, uniform crystals form during solidification. This makes the weld stronger and tougher and reduces the risk of cracking. Too little of it does nothing, too much makes the structure brittle and sensitive to stress. So you have to keep a close eye on the addition. Also watch the cooling so that the structure becomes clean and homogeneous.
