Zirconium-copper alloy

A copper-based alloy with minor zirconium additions that exhibits softening resistance at elevated temperatures. It is applied in electrical equipment experiencing high thermal stress.

Zirconium copper is a high-strength, heat-resistant material, but it can quickly lose its good properties during welding if it gets too hot. You must keep the heat input as low as possible and weld quickly, preferably with TIG and argon. After welding, the material at the weld is usually softer than the base metal – that's normal. If you put in too much heat or cool slowly, you anneal the material and it becomes soft and unusable. So: weld short and crisp, don't post-heat, and let the weld cool in air.
