Stray arc
An arc strike is localized damage to the workpiece surface caused by accidentally touching the electrode during welding. It creates hard, brittle zones and promotes cracking under fatigue loading.
Physicochemical Mechanism of Action
The arc strike occurs when the electrode unintentionally touches the workpiece surface. This causes rapid, localized heating and formation of hard, brittle zones such as martensite.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
Arc strikes can create hard, crack-prone spots that may crack under mechanical load. They impair the strength and service life of the weld.
Workshop Practice & Action Instructions
Avoid unintentionally touching the electrode to the workpiece surface. Keep a constant distance between the electrode and the workpiece, and ensure correct welding parameters such as current and voltage.
