Tensile testing of metals

A tensile test is a standard test in which a metal specimen is pulled until fracture. It yields values such as yield strength, tensile strength, and elongation at break, which are essential for mechanical characterization of materials.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

In a tensile test, a metal specimen is stretched under increasing tensile load until it finally breaks. This process indicates the material's elastic and plastic deformability.

Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks

The results of the tensile test help in selecting suitable materials for specific applications. Incorrect values can lead to inadequate strength or a high risk of fracture, which can be dangerous especially in critical components.

Workshop Practice & Action Guidelines

For the tensile test, a standardized metal specimen is used. The stress is continuously increased and recorded until the specimen breaks. It is important to conduct the test under standardized conditions to obtain reliable results.
