Consumable Identification

Filler material identification is the unique marking of welding consumables to avoid mix-ups and ensure the correct filler is used for the base material. This ensures proper processing and improves weld quality.

Physicochemical Mechanism of Action

The identification of filler metals involves marking or labeling the fillers with unique codes, colors, or characters. This allows the welder to quickly and reliably identify which fillers are suitable for the respective task.

Metallurgical Relevance & Risks in Welding

The use of incorrect fillers can lead to undesirable properties of the weld, such as excessive stress buildup, insufficient strength, or poor toughness. This increases the risk of cracks and wear problems. Correct identification prevents such errors and ensures a safe and high-quality weld.

Workshop Practice & Instructions

1. Label all filler metals: Use clear labels or codes that clearly identify the filler and its application.

2. Use colors: Mark different fillers with different colors to quickly distinguish them.

3. Check before use: Ensure that the filler used matches the label and is suitable for the chosen base material.

4. Storage: Store the fillers in separate containers to avoid mix-ups.
