Duplex dual-phase microstructure

Two-phase duplex microstructure consists of ferrite and austenite in roughly equal proportions. It combines high strength with better corrosion resistance.

How it works physically and chemically

Dual-phase structure forms when the steel cools from the melt just right. Ferrite (a soft phase) and austenite (a harder phase) form at the same time, about 50/50.

Why it matters for welding & what can go wrong

This structure boosts the weld's strength and corrosion resistance. But it also makes the metal less formable and can build up stress if you don't handle it right.

What to do in the shop

To get dual-phase structure, weld the steel with a high chromium and nickel content in the melt. Control the cooling so the phases form evenly. If you let it cool too fast, you'll get stress, so watch your welding parameters carefully.
