Binary Phase Diagram
A diagram that shows the state (solid, liquid, or gaseous) of two elements at different temperatures and concentrations.
How it works physically and chemically
A binary phase diagram shows what happens to two elements at different temperatures and concentrations. It tells you whether they exist as pure metals, an alloy, or a solution.
Why it matters for welding & what can go wrong
These diagrams help you pick the right filler metal and process settings. Get them wrong and you can get unwanted phase changes that mess up the weld.
What to do in the shop
Use the diagram to figure out the right mix for your filler. Watch the temperature and concentration to hit the phases you want. For example, when welding steel with copper, check the binary phase diagram for the right mix and temperature.
