Two-stage microstructure
Two-phase structure consists of two main phases, such as soft ferrite and hard martensite. It combines specific properties like hardness and toughness.
Physical-Chemical Mechanism of Action
A two-stage structure forms when two different metal phases are present simultaneously. For example, in steels where ferrite (soft) and martensite (hard) exist side by side.
Metallurgical Relevance & Welding Risks
This combination improves the hardness and toughness of the materials, but it can also lead to cracks if cooling is not properly controlled. Too fast cooling can enlarge the martensite and make the weld prone to cracking.
Shop Practice & Action Guidelines
Make sure welding is done in a critical temperature window to get a stable two-stage structure. For high-quality steel grades, use a controlled cooling sequence and pay attention to proper throttling.
