Twin-Lamellar Martensite

Twinned lath martensite is a plate-like martensitic structure with internal twinning, occurring at high carbon content and reducing stresses.

Physicochemical mechanism of action

Twin lamellar martensite forms when high-carbon steels are cooled rapidly. Fast quenching prevents full austenite transformation and produces a plate-shaped structure with internal twin formation.

Metallurgical relevance & welding risks

This structure reduces internal stresses, which decreases hardness and makes the material more flexible. However, it can increase susceptibility to cracking if the quenching is not done correctly.

Workshop practice & instructions

To avoid twin lamellar martensite, cooling after welding should be slow and controlled. A cooling duration of at least 30 seconds is recommended to ensure complete austenite transformation.
