Interpass Temperature

The maximum permissible or required temperature of the workpiece between successive weld passes in multi-run welding to prevent unwanted grain growth or embrittlement.

The interpass temperature is the temperature the workpiece may have between two weld passes. If you let it get too high, you anneal the structure, it becomes coarse-grained and the weld becomes brittle. Then you quickly get cracks. If you go too low, that can also cause problems with some materials because the weld cools too quickly and hardens. So stick to the range specified by the material, otherwise you ruin the toughness.
