Interpass Temperature Monitoring
The control of the minimum and maximum temperature between successive weld passes to prevent adverse microstructural alterations.
The interpass temperature is the temperature of the part before you weld the next layer. If you don't control it, you'll get microstructure problems, the material can become brittle, or cracks can form. You have to measure the temperature and wait until it's in the right range – not too hot, or the structure will burn, and not too cold, or you risk stresses and hardening cracks. Especially with higher-strength materials, this is a must. So: between layers, always measure briefly and plan the cooling time. It's not rocket science, but care costs nothing and saves you from scrap.
