C40E

1.1149 (C40) is a [[glossary:verguetungsstahl|quenched and tempered steel]]: by [[glossary:haerten|hardening]] plus [[glossary:anlassen|tempering]] it achieves high strength with good [[glossary:zaehigkeit|toughness]] — the material for shafts, gears, and highly stressed parts. When welding, the [[glossary:waermeeinflusszone|heat-affected zone]] hardens. Typical analysis: 0.22 % C, 0.55 % Mn, 0.25 % Si. For higher wear protection, three hard-facing options are available: S Fe 1 (martensitic, approx. 300–400 HB, machinable), S Fe 2 (wear-resistant and tough, approx. 50–55 HRC, conditionally machinable) and S Fe 15 (carbide-rich, approx. 55–65+ HRC, not machinable).
