1.2311

40CrMnMo7

1.2311 (40CrMnMo7) is the classic among low-alloy mold steels: with only about 1.9 % [[element:Cr|chromium]], [[glossary:vergueten|pre-hardened]] and easy to machine. It's the entry-level material for large injection molds and press dies where price and [[glossary:zerspanbarkeit|machinability]] matter, not extreme hot strength. When welding, the [[glossary:wez|heat-affected zone]] hardens despite the moderate C content – [[glossary:vorwaermen|preheating]] is a must.
