1.4438

X2CrNiMo18-15-4

The 1.4438 (X2CrNiMo18-15-4 (AISI 317L)) is an austenitic, stainless [[element:Cr|chromium]]-[[element:Ni|nickel]] steel — non-magnetic, tough right through, and usually easy to weld. The [[element:Mo|molybdenum]] grades (like 1.4404 or 1.4571) also stand up better to chlorides. Known weak points when welding: strong thermal expansion ([[glossary:verzug|distortion]]), tendency to [[glossary:heissriss|hot cracking]], and the risk of [[glossary:chromverarmung|chromium depletion]] in the [[glossary:waermeeinflusszone|heat-affected zone]]. Typical analysis: 0.02 % C, 18.5 % Cr, 1.2 % Mn, 3.5 % Mo, 14 % Ni, 0.5 % Si.
