S 290

S 290 Microclean is a powder metallurgical high-speed steel from Böhler with very high [[element:V|vanadium]] and [[element:C|carbon]] content. The finely distributed vanadium [[glossary:karbid|carbides]] give it extreme [[glossary:verschleissfestigkeit|wear resistance]] — for high-performance [[glossary:zerspanen|machining]] and abrasively stressed tools. When welding, treat it like a high-alloy PM tool steel: preheat, weld hot, temper immediately. Typical analysis: 2.0 % C, 14.3 % W, 11.0 % Co, 5.0 % V, 3.8 % Cr, 2.5 % Mo.
