被削性
材料を旋削、フライス加工、穴あけなどの切削加工でどの程度うまく加工できるか。被削性が良ければ、加工はより速く、きれいに、工具摩耗も少なく進む。
Physical and chemical mechanism
Machinability describes how easily a material can be cut by machining processes such as turning, milling, and drilling. It depends on hardness, strength, and microstructure as well as on inclusions that act as chip breakers. Good machinability means faster, cleaner cutting with less tool wear.
Metallurgical relevance and welding risks
Machinability is strongly influenced by the alloy composition and heat treatment. Free-cutting additions such as sulfur or lead improve chip breaking but can reduce weldability, because these elements promote hot cracking and porosity in the weld. When welding free-cutting steels, keep the heat input low and select a suitable filler.
Workshop practice and instructions
For machining, choose cutting speeds, feeds, and tool geometry to suit the material and its condition. For welding free-cutting grades, clean the joint thoroughly and use a filler that tolerates the sulfur or lead content. Keep the heat input controlled to avoid cracking and porosity.
