Material Testing & QA
Tensile test, impact test, hardness testing, and ultrasonic — destructive and non-destructive testing of material and weld.
Destructive Material Testing
Destructive testing means: the specimen is destroyed in the process, but in return it gives you hard numbers. The tensile test measures strength and elongation, the Charpy impact test measures toughness, and the hardness test measures resistance to indentation. These exact values appear in every datasheet — and in every welding procedure specification.

Non-destructive testing finds cracks, pores, and lack of fusion in the weld without destroying it. Ultrasonic and radiographic testing look inside, magnetic particle and dye penetrant find surface cracks. Knowing the four methods tells you how a weld is really inspected.

Some answers only come from looking into the material: the macroetch shows weld geometry and zones, the microetch shows the microstructure in detail, and the hardness traverse shows hardening. Metallographic examination is the bridge between the measured values and what really happened in the weld.
